George Sutherland is running for Transylvania County Commissioner because he believes in the people of Western North Carolina. With over twenty years of calling Brevard and Transylvania County home, George understands the unique challenges and opportunities facing our community. From affordable housing and quality education to supporting local businesses and keeping our neighborhoods safe, George is committed to working for every resident of Transylvania County.
A dedicated public servant and community member, George brings a lifetime of experience to the commissioner's race. After growing up in a farming community in central Illinois, he worked his way through college as a railroad brakeman, earned a master's degree in Education, spent seven years coaching college football, and built a successful thirty-year career as a financial investment advisor. His commitment to fiscal responsibility and integrity has been the foundation of everything he does.
As your next County Commissioner, George Sutherland will fight for the issues that matter most to Transylvania County families: raising incomes while preserving our cherished small-town traditions, expanding affordable housing options for working families in Brevard and throughout the county, investing in quality skills-based education to prepare our young people for rewarding careers right here at home, and building safe, drug-free communities where every family can thrive.
George and his wife Kathy live in the Williamson Creek area of Transylvania County with their black lab, Willie. George has served our community as a teacher at Schenck Job Corps and as a substitute teacher in local schools. He continues to be an active, engaged citizen who listens to every voice in Transylvania County.
